GREAT LEAP? NEXT STEP?
The Internet of Things: an evening lecture by
Jo Cornu (Alcatel-Lucent) and Joachim De Vos (Living Tomorrow)
12 November 2007 - 18:30
Great leap or next step? On Nov 12th, FITCE.be organised an evening lecture around ' Internet of Things' in the very appropriate location of Living Tomorrow in Vilvoorde. Around 120 invitees were present. Jo Cornu, chairman of the board of Alcatel-Lucent Bell and Joachim De Vos, director Innovation at Living Tomorrow, presented their latest insights regarding this promising topic.
'Internet of things' relies on the vision that the world is getting increasingly connected encompassing interconnections between 'humans' and 'things' independent of time and location. Jo Cornu provided his vision on how evolving technology (miniaturization, radio technologies) enable the 'internet of things' concept and how this can help addressing a number of societal challenges
we face today. Jo gave examples related to healthcare, transportation, security and energy & environment. Joachim explained Living Tomorrow's distributed intelligence model or how smart devices create user-experiences and connect to various content in an intelligent way. Both speakers pointed out the importance of privacy protection as an aspect which should be built in at the design phase of new applications to ensure public adoption.
A question and answer session concluded the presentation, after which the audience was invited for a guided tour in the futuristic facilities of Living Tomorrow 3. During a networking reception, the participants could share their thoughts on how 'internet of things' could further benefit society in the near future. The presentations can be downloaded here:
