Symposium : "My Energy bill: Help!"Climate change and rational energy usage form major challenges in our ever growing society.
In that respect, the EU has launched the ambitious 20-20-20 targets: a 20% cut in emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020; a 20% increase in the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix; and a 20% cut in energy consumption [1] .
From an economical point of view, many players (governments, industries, households, …) are of course also very concerned about the every growing energy bill.
This FITCE.be symposium will give an answer to the question how ICT is capable of reducing your energy bill in a sustainable way.
After introducing the European viewpoint, different environments will be presented: the residential and home environment, the manufacturing and building environment and finally the community and city environment.
For each of the environments the major challenges, the solutions that ICT can bring and two business cases will be discussed.
Program
13:30 Welcome and registration - message by our host.
Wim De Meyer
14:00 Introduction – Prof. Piet Demeester, Ghent University – IBBT
14:15 Rationalize your energy consumption: a European perspective –
Colette Maloney, head of Unit ICT for Sustainable Growth,
European Commission.
We are using more and more energy. To continue living our lives as we do,
we need to find new, more environmentally friendly sources of energy,
closer to home.
Changing our energy consumption patterns is a major challenge but the
application of ICT should make it possible without reducing our quality of life.
This presentation will set the scene by giving the European Commission’s
view on how ICT can contribute to cope with these challenges.
14:45 Power to the People –
Thierry Pollet, Smart Metering Venture, Alcatel-Lucent.
Electricity consumption accounts for about one third of the CO2 emissions
and consumes one third of energy supply.
Smart (sub)-Metering is one of the instruments to monitor and influence
energy consumption. It allows consumers to adopt eco-friendly energy
consumption patterns and to achieve energy bill savings.
This presentation will provide more insight in the technical aspects of
smart metering and the value it brings to the end-user.
15:15 Coffee Break
15:45 Energy efficiency in building and manufacturing environments –
Pierre Vandenkerckhove, Industry Solutions Division, Energy
and Maintenance manager, Siemens.
There exists an untapped potential to focus on systemic improvements
and to further reduce the energy consumption of processes (including
operations, manufacturing, service delivery and the supply chain).
This presentation will focus on a generic best-practice approach for
minimizing the energy consumption in buildings, plants and production
processes.
16:15 Smart connected Communities –
John Baekelmans, Director Customer Solutions, Cisco.
By 2050, at least 100 new cities will be built with one million-plus people.
Existing cities will face significant growth and the need to develop in
new ways.
The ability of these communities to sustainably balance social, economic,
and environmental resources will become more critical than ever before.
As community infrastructure becomes progressively more connected to
the Internet, there is a market transition towards building and running
communities on networked information.
Using the network as a platform, “Smart Connected Communities” can
unleash significant new opportunities for sustainable productivity, growth,
and innovation.
16:45 Concluding remarks
17:00 Networking Reception.
